BFGoodrich – A Brief History of Innovation

BFGoodrich is an American brand whose origins date back to 1870 when Dr Benjamin Franklin Goodrich established the first rubber factory in North America. Initially specialising in rubber hoses, the company quickly found success, enabling it to expand its product range. By 1896, BFGoodrich introduced the first tyres in American automotive history. Notably, the first car to traverse the United States from east to west was equipped with BFGoodrich tyres.

The company's innovative approach quickly earned it recognition, first in the United States and later worldwide. BFGoodrich was a pioneer in introducing tubeless tyres and run-flat technology to the American market. With numerous achievements in national competitions and rallies, the brand significantly influenced the tyre industry. Charles Cross Goodrich, the founder's son, established the first tyre research centre in the United States, further cementing the company's leadership.

Today, BFGoodrich produces mid-range tyres not only in the United States but globally. The brand is renowned for innovation beyond automotive applications; for instance, BFGoodrich products were part of the equipment for the 1977 Columbia space shuttle mission.

In 1986, BFGoodrich merged with Uniroyal, another prominent tyre manufacturer. Subsequently, the company shifted its focus to chemical operations and aviation products, leading to the sale of its tyre division. In 1989, French tyre giant Michelin acquired the "Uniroyal-Goodrich Tire Company," revitalising the BFGoodrich brand. The distinctive logo, beloved by drivers worldwide, remained unchanged, ensuring continuity and loyalty. Under Michelin, BFGoodrich has maintained its legacy of exceeding stringent quality standards in both the United States and Europe.
