Gulf Products – Over 100 Years of History

Gulf was officially established in the USA in 1907, though its operations began a few years earlier. In 1901, a group of investors from Pennsylvania acquired the rights to drill for oil in the Texan town of Beaumont and built a refinery in the region. The name "Gulf" refers to the Gulf of Mexico, where the brand's initial oil fields were located.

In the early 20th century, Gulf rapidly diversified its oil sources. By 1907, it had opened a pipeline from Oklahoma to its Texas refinery, followed by connections to other oil fields. This extensive supply network required significant investment but ensured cost-effective and swift transportation of crude oil.

A key innovation driving Gulf's growth was branded gasoline. In the early 1900s, most fuels in the United States were sold in unlabelled containers with questionable quality and composition. Gulf introduced sales from containers and pumps marked with its distinctive orange-circle logo. Motorists quickly recognised the quality of Gulf gasoline and preferred it over products from unbranded companies.

Gulf grew rapidly, peaking in the 1960s and early 1970s, becoming famous for sponsoring racing teams. Gulf Racing's blue-and-orange-liveried Ford GT40s and Porsche 917s, driven by John Wyer's team, competed in the Le Mans race. However, following the 1974 oil crisis, the company struggled and merged with Chevron in the mid-1980s. Many of its assets were acquired by other oil companies.

In 1997, Chevron sold the rights to the Gulf brand to companies that previously produced Gulf oils under license. Since then, the brand has been used to market products such as engine oils and transmission oils, alongside renewed involvement in motorsports sponsorship.

Gulf Oils – Proven in Extreme Conditions

Gulf products have long been associated with motorsport. After overcoming financial difficulties, the brand resumed supporting racing teams in 2010, including partnerships with the Aprilla team in MotoGP and McLaren in Formula 1, as well as their road car projects.

Gulf transmission oils are found in the gearboxes of highly advanced sports cars, including F1 cars. These products benefit from cutting-edge research and data collected in the most demanding conditions. Creating oils capable of enduring Grand Prix races demonstrates Gulf's expertise, ensuring their suitability for your vehicle too.

Gulf Products – Renowned for Durability

The brand's motorsport heritage is epitomised by its teams’ participation in Le Mans. Iconic blue cars with orange stripes raced in the event for years, winning in 1975 with the Mirage GR8 Ford Cosworth. Drawing on this legacy, Gulf oils are designed to endure extreme stress over long durations, forming a key part of the brand’s identity and philosophy.

Gulf transmission oils for manual gearboxes provide long-lasting performance, enhancing reliability, reducing wear, and ensuring smooth operation. They are suitable for delivery vans, sports cars, and everyday vehicles, including premium models.

Equally reliable are Gulf engine oils, tailored for various types of car and motorcycle engines. With strong ties to the Asian market, Gulf also focuses on oils for scooters and lightweight motorcycles, which are particularly popular in the region. Gulf’s car oils are available in semi-synthetic, synthetic, and premium synthetic variants, ensuring a perfect match for your engine’s requirements.
