Air Filters
To ensure your engine runs efficiently, several factors must align. The temperature around the engine should be optimal, the fuel should be as clean as possible, and all components need to be properly lubricated. Another crucial aspect is that the engine must receive clean air. In this category, you will find air filters designed to provide just that.
What is an Air Filter?
Air filters have been an integral part of vehicles since the early days of the automotive industry. The first air filter was introduced in 1916. Of course, much has changed since then, and modern filters, like today’s vehicles, look and function very differently.
The purpose of an air filter is to clean the air entering the engine. This is critical for both the safety and efficiency of the engine. Without a filter, various contaminants could enter the engine, potentially damaging components such as pistons or cylinders.
Air filters are designed to trap pollutants like dust, sand, and contaminants from other vehicle emissions. For every 1,000 miles driven, up to 20 grams of dust can enter your car. Thankfully, modern filters, like those in our range, capture almost all contaminants.
When Should You Replace an Air Filter?
Air filters become less effective over time as they trap more pollutants. The more they filter, the more clogged they become, making replacement essential. Clean air intake is crucial for engine performance and longevity. Replacing an air filter costs far less than repairing or replacing engine components.
Consult your car’s manual for guidance on how often to replace air filters. Most manufacturers recommend changing them every 10,000 to 12,000 miles. If you notice reduced engine power or increased fuel consumption, these may be signs of a clogged air filter. A blocked filter restricts airflow, preventing the engine from functioning efficiently.
Types of Air Filters
Drivers typically think of two main types of air filters:
-
Dry filters. These use a filtering material, such as cotton, polyester, or cellulose, which is designed for high permeability and moisture resistance.
-
Wet filters. These include an additional layer of oil to enhance filtration.
Modern vehicles predominantly use dry filters. Wet filters were common in the past but are now mostly found in performance or sports cars, where they are sometimes used as part of tuning to enhance engine efficiency.
What is a Cone Air Filter?
A cone air filter is a specific type of air filter design that allows greater airflow compared to standard filters. It is particularly effective in high-performance vehicles where air intake plays a crucial role in engine output. These filters are often used in sports cars.
However, cone filters require cold air to function optimally, and additional modifications may be needed when replacing a standard filter with a cone one. If you frequently drive on dusty roads, construction sites, or other high-dust environments, cone filters are not recommended.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
What are air filters?
Air filters are essential components of a vehicle’s air intake system. They consist of a durable casing and a specialised filter element made from various materials such as paper, cotton, or mesh. Regular replacement is recommended every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or at least once a year, typically during vehicle servicing.
How do air filters work?
Air filters play a crucial role in cleaning the air entering the engine, trapping contaminants such as oils, soot, dust, and sand particles. Regular use in off-road or dusty environments necessitates more frequent replacement. A clogged air filter can lead to reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and potential mechanical issues.
Where is the air filter located in a car?
The air filter is typically found in the engine compartment, under the bonnet. It is housed in a visible box secured by screws or spring clips. In some models, it may be located behind the engine cover but remains accessible for maintenance or replacement.
